A.R.E.M.E. NEWSLETTER
November – December 2024
Well, the festive season is still with us, and we hope you have all enjoyed a Happy Christmas day.
Sadly, we are sorry to inform all of you that our membership secretary, Shirley Mill, has recently suffered a stroke and is currently having treatment. Our thoughts are with Shirely, Grant and their family and wishing Shirely a speedy recovery.
As A.R.E.M.E. members know the month of November is normally filled with our usual coffee mornings and the competitive quiz nights at ViceVersa. However, this year the Estepona town hall asked the committee to put together a day of culture on the 16th of November. Maybe some of you had already visited the days of culture of other countries such as Italy, Ukraine and Mexico who had been on the sea front at a time when the weather was settled. When our brief was given to us with a date in November, we decided to take up the offer of holding it in the Palacio de Congresos and set about how to organise it.
The organisation was a bit frantic given the timescales, with the added pressure for one of our committee members, Sally Robinson, being followed around for the whole day by the Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun film crew. Even with such short notice we managed to bring together 8 acts and 24 stall holders to support us during the day. We were delighted by their fantastic response and our thanks go to everyone from near and far who helped us make it a great day and show the town what AREME can do under pressure.
On the 2nd of December we held our Mince Pie and coffee morning in Ricks bar in the port and also had a raffle for our fund raising. We are pleased to say that we had around 40 members support us on a warm sunny morning and with a very persuasive ticket seller for the raffle, and some money from the coffee and pies, we made €175.00. Again, our thanks go to all the members and their generous support.
The town hall has for many years promoted Christmas with an evening called SWEET CHRISTMAS where different countries show typical food eaten over the festive season in their part of the world. AREME have supported this event in the past and we were very pleased when Fiona Biddiscombe kindly baked one of her wonderful cakes providing an entrance from the UK. Thank you, Fiona.
Our target of €2000 for the soup kitchen in Estepona has now been reached and it is hoped that a presentation will be made in January of 2025.
We should be able to announce shortly, thanks to the efforts of one of our committee members, that their AREME card will get them discount in certain Estepona businesses.
